Our central research questions are:
(1) What are the ecological, anthropogenic and evolutionary factors controlling the composition of communities of animals in different ecosystems?
(2) What are the consequences of biodiversity for the functionality of ecosystems?
Specific topics are:
- Biodiversity of local animal communities under the influence of natural and anthropogenic drivers
- Macroecology of various animal groups at different spatial scales
- Evolutionary ecology of herbivorous insects
- Comparison between tropical and temperate-zone communities
The models used comprise as diverse animal groups as butterflies, moths, beetles, ants, dragonflies, birds, bats, amphibians and reptiles.
